What is a car repair customer worth over their lifetime?

You spend money to get new customers but you've never added up what one is actually worth. Here's how Nolavi works through it, the same way a good mechanic works on a car: find the concern, the cause, the correction, then verify the fix.

1

The concern

Nate was paying about $63 to get each new customer and wasn't sure if that was too much.

2

The cause

Nobody had worked out what a customer was worth over time. Nolavi looked at three years of repair orders: a typical customer came back 3.4 times over two years, spending an average of $397 a visit. After parts and labor, each visit left about $335 in gross profit. A customer was worth $1,140 over two years.

3

The correction

With that number, $63 to get a new customer is a strong return. We raised the budget on the two channels bringing in the best customers, since the math said there was room.

4

The verification

Marketing spend went from $2,400 to $2,900 a month. New customer sales went up $6,800 a month. The Monday report now shows lifetime value next to cost per customer every week.

Questions

Quick answers.

How do I calculate customer lifetime value for a repair shop?

Take the average number of visits over two or three years, multiply by average gross profit per visit, and that's your number. Nolavi works it out from your own repair orders so you don't have to guess.

Why does lifetime value matter for marketing?

It tells you how much you can afford to pay to get a new customer. If a customer is worth $1,140, spending $63 to get one is a great deal. Without that number you're guessing at every budget decision.
