How much do auto repair shop owners actually make?

You work 60 hours a week and you're still not sure what you actually made. Here's how Nolavi works through it, the same way a good mechanic works on a car: find the concern, the cause, the correction, then verify the fix.

1

The concern

Nate ran Nate's Auto Repair for eight years. Most months he paid everyone else first and took whatever was left. Some months that was $11,000. Some months it was $1,200.

2

The cause

Nolavi pulled his numbers and compared them to what his shop actually produced. His effective labor rate was $104 an hour against a posted rate of $145. Parts profit was 38% when it should have been 45%. About $1,250 a month went to ads that brought no customers. Those three leaks added up to more than his owner pay on slow months.

3

The correction

Nolavi set a weekly owner pay of $1,450, built into payroll, and a quarterly profit share when the shop beats its goal. It closed each leak one at a time from the What needs you list: the labor rate first, then parts, then the wasted ads. Nate approved each fix in one tap.

4

The verification

He's been paid every week for five months. His quarterly profit share in September was $6,800. Nolavi shows his owner pay and profit share every Monday alongside the shop's score.

Questions

Quick answers.

How much does an auto repair shop owner make?

It varies a lot. Shops doing $1M to $2M in sales often support an owner pay of $80,000 to $150,000 a year, but the actual number comes from your margin, not your revenue. Nolavi works it out from your real numbers.

Why do busy shop owners not make much money?

Usually a few leaks: labor priced below cost on some jobs, parts margin too thin, or marketing that doesn't bring customers. Plug those and the same car count pays a lot more.
