How do I hire a good auto repair technician when everyone is short-staffed?

You put up a job post and either nobody applies or the wrong people do. Here's how Nolavi works through it, the same way a good mechanic works on a car: find the concern, the cause, the correction, then verify the fix.

1

The concern

Nate needed a second technician. He posted on three job boards and got 11 applications in three weeks. He hired the first one who seemed qualified. Eight weeks later, the tech was gone and Nate was back to square one.

2

The cause

Nolavi pulled two years of labor data from the shop. Nate needed a tech who could bill at least 30 hours a week to cover their cost at his labor rate and pay scale. His posting said nothing about that. He had no number to hire against and no way to spot it in a new hire before six weeks of hope and missed production.

3

The correction

Nolavi works out the minimum billable hours a new tech must reach before they cover their own cost, using the shop's real labor rate, payroll and overhead. That number goes into the job post and the first month review. Nate rewrote his posting around the work: what jobs the shop needs most, what a good week looks like in billed hours, and what the pay plan pays at that output.

4

The verification

His next hire hit 28 billable hours in week two and 34 by week six. Nolavi showed the billed hours each week and flagged the one week the tech dropped to 19, giving Nate something to talk about before it became a pattern.

Questions

Quick answers.

How do I know if a new technician is working out?

Track their billed hours every week from day one. Set the target before they start and have a plain conversation if they fall short. Nolavi tracks it automatically so you always have the number.

What should I pay an auto repair technician?

Start with what your shop can afford based on its labor rate, hours billed per week and overhead. Nolavi works out the number that keeps you profitable at every pay level.
